Like most people this season, I have several layers of bedding. Sheet, light blanket, heavier blanket, and then I keep a flannel sheet on the top of the bed because I have um, dogs. I had no idea that the various layers on my bed would provide so many house of entertainment.
Marley prefers sleeping between the light blanket and the heavy blanket. Jane prefers outside on top, or on the same layer as me. However, sometimes there is some confusion.
Up until about a month ago, I’d roll over at night and then hold up the blankets so the dogs could get “under”. Well, this usually involved a lot of trying it out and deciding that they didn’t really want to sleep there and meanwhile I’d be holding up the damn blanket when I was half asleep. Then I figured it out and let the dogs decide for themselves when and where they were going to sleep.
I was watching TV last night, and Marley was in her designated place down by my feet (her preferred location), Jane was snuggled up next to me under all the covers, and then the Cat appeared. With every one of his precise footfalls towards me, Jane would let out a growl. Closer, closer the evil black animal came… eventually Jane rushed out of the covers and attacked him. That made Marley run around under the covers at my feet trying to figure out how to get out. Then the three of them began tussling on the bed.
The cat eventually left the scene of the fracas, but that gave the two dogs the opportunity to go under the covers and tussle under there!
Yes, I kicked them out. Yes, they eventually settled down. But on those night when each animal is on a different layer, and I’m the one on the bottom, it is a little like being in blanket prison.
